Right then. We're going to do this story thing. It will split quite nicely into fourteen episodes, so I'll post one every other day, starting in a minute.
In case anyone's been wondering about the crick/crack thing, it's an introduction type thing storytellers use to get the listeners to show that they want to hear the story (and that they're listening) the storyteller says 'crick!' and the listeners respond 'crack!'. There are various others (last saturday's was 'socks!' 'boots!'), but crick crack is the most common as far as I know.
So I'll get on with it. First I must tell you: this is not a children's story. It's quite gruesome in a couple of places. As I understand it, it is a story that exists in various forms but is a traditional gypsy story. If you google it there is a reference to is specifically as a Hungarian story but there are versions from britain too. There will be as many versions as there are storytellers.
