The girl was filled with longing for the young man, and the next evening, when her work was done, she stood outside the house, waiting for the him to pass, hoping he would see her. The young man rode on past her, high above her on his fine stallion, and did not notice her.

The next evening, when she heard the hooves of the horse approach, she ran outside again, smoothing down her hair and pinching her cheeks to redden them. Again, the young man did not see her.

On the third evening, the girl put on her best dress, combed her hair, pinched her cheeks and stood outside the house in the pink light of the setting sun. Again, the young man did not notice her.

As the sound of the horse's hooves faded into the distance, the girl turned and walked down the road away from the village. She walked to a house, which stood on its own by the road, on the edge of the forest.

The house of the witch.
