The girl reached a clearing in the wood. She placed the mirror in a fork in the branches of a tree, and she gathered twigs and leaves to make a bonfire.

By the light of the fire the girl danced. She danced until her skin glistened in the firelight, and as she danced she sang of her longing for the young man, for a life of her own, and her sadness that she could not make him notice her. She sang of her joy at the secrets the witch had told her, and her belief that the young man would be hers.

Her dance and song at last ended, she stood with her back to the embers of the fire, and gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Her eyes shone, her skin was glistening, and her hair was wild and smelled of wood smoke.

In the mirror she saw a figure. Behind her, the devil stepped out of the fire, and, walking up to her, put his hand upon her shoulder.
