How, and more importantly why.....??

After being a student for an incredibly long time I have managed to lose my nus card, for the second time this week!!! To make it that bit more annoying I really need it this Sunday so if I fail to find it (tearing my room to pieces) it's costing me £5 to get a new one.......

Now, one of those things that often confuses me is the back and forth debate between Creationists and Evolutionists (didn't want to call them Darwinists, and as you can get 'Creation Scientist' I could not call them 'Scientists').

There is an article on the BBCi about a teacher's union saying that it is becoming alarmed at the rise in lessons that teach creation as a literal truth. What surpirsed me was that there is, in Portsmouth, a Creation museum (Genisis Expo) where children can play with Boris the dinosaur and learn why evolotion is scientifically impossible.

I, being a scientist, don't so much agree with this, but, do admit to the fact that evolotion is just a theory and isn't proven (it is also a fact, but only on a small scale). The problem I have with this argument is that there is nothing in the Bible that can be proved scientifically either.

One of those interesting things about science is that it can neither prove, nor disprove the existance of God. It can't. You either believe, or you don't. That is the basis of faith, belief without proof.

What science can do is look at the universe and learn what the laws and rules that God has put into it so that it runs. I mean, if I was an all powerful being would I want to have to pay attention to make sure a sugar lump disolves in a cup of tea, when I can design the universe to do it automatically.

I will admit that maybe God did bring the universe into being 6,000 odd years ago, but if he did I believe that he brought it in as if it was 15,000,000,000 years old. As a scientist I know that there are somerules in science that can not be broken, and results using these have shown there are things older than 6,000years. The Chinese have written records going back 10,000years.....

Genisis was written a long time after the events in it occured. It was correlated by the scribes of Israel from spoken traditions. Are these likely to have been highly accurate after generations of telling?? I know of personal stories from only last year that when I hear told now have been exagerated. As any police officer will tell you, an eye-wittness is the least reliable wittness!!!

I also feel that there are some things that a literal explanation of Genisis fails to explain. If all the dinosaurs were killed off in the great flood, why is it that they are seperated, why are some found lower down in the mud than others, the world over..... And if all mankind was also killed (except Noah and his family) why have no human remains been found??

Thinking of the human link, how is it that between Noah and Moses the People of Israel were slaves to the Egyptians?? Where did they come from?? And the people that the People of Israel killed when they got to the promised lands....... and us.....

Do I believe that God created the Universe and everything in it. Yes.

Do I believe in the scientific princibles that lie behind such theories as evolution, or gravity. Yes.

Do I believe in a literal six day creation. No. I can't. Not while there are such obvious, glaring gaps in the teachings.

Do I mind children learning about creation in Religious Studies classes?? No.

Do I mind children learning about creation in Science classes?? Yes.
