Having been told that I've in fact been a long-term hopeless romantic (thanks Matty) I've suddenly realised that the only easy link I can make between that comment and what I want to write is to talk about the ancient practice of writing letters to the one you love cause you are off away somewhere, doing your duty for King and Country...... all very romanatic, but slightly off topic........
As I was going to ponder the joy of writing actual letters. Which is something that I've taken to doing over the last few months. In some cases it's impractical as they'd take (at the best of time) several days (like sending them to Canada) so email is very useful, but where you know the person might not get to the computer very often, or you don't get to see them, it's a lovely, tangible way of saying hello.
There's something personal about a letter, the effort taken to put pen to paper, to write it, that phoning just doesn't have. Now I'm not saying that the telephone should be banned, there have been a number of occasions where it's been nice to hear the person, but I am one of these people that don't like making "cold calls" when I'm not expected. What if the person is busy, eating, or watching tv, or doing something....??? I don't want to interupt them...... with a letter, it's there, ready for them to read when they want to.
I also feel that it is easier to say stuff in letters. When having a conversation it can be hard to find the right moment to ask something, or to say something that's bothering you. In a letter, you can make that moment, you can put the words that you want to without being interupted.... I was trying to say something like this in a letter I was writing last night, but was struggling to get it right. If you're writing, you get that second chance to change stuff...... if the recipient of the letter reads this, and spots the similarities, I think I wrote it better here.......
Now all I need to do is work on my handwriting...... why can't I have a nice flowing script like most other people...??? It can't just be because I'm left-handed and male.... can it...????
