From page two of The Times, yesterday.......
The public is sceptical about the case for building new nuclear power stations, despite concerns that Britain may have to rely on imported gas for future energy needs.
Hostility to nuclear power is matched by a belief that renewable sources of energy such as wind farms could fill the gap in energy needs in the next 20 years, the Populus survey finds.
- Angela Jameson
Every now and again I despair at 'The Public' in the fact that they don't seem to get it. Inside the next 15-20 years Britain will have an energy shortfall to the point where there will be brown-outs and black-outs in this country without more power stations.
And no, renewable sources will not be enough. They are planning on building the world's largest off shore wind farm in the Firth of Clyde... it should be enough to suply the power to Glasgow.... and Glasgow only. And we're talking about the world's largest wind farm!!!!
We don't have the weather for an effective solar power system, hydro-electric dams involve the loss of land, river barges are unproven and risk ecological damage.
Nuclear power has moved on a lot since Chernobyl, but people just don't seem to realise this. "Oh, it's all so dangerous, blah blah, blah......" it is safe, cheap and reliable.
However, it takes 10-15 years to plan and build a nuclear power station and so if we are to have replacements ready for when our old coal and nuclear power stations are decommissioned we need to start really, really soon.....
It's not often I'd suggest this, but n this case, 'The Public' really doesn't know what it's talking about. We will need these power stations and if we don't start soon, we will be over a barrel!!!!
