Now many people have seen the film When Harry Met Sally and it's particually well known for that scene in the cafe with the followup line of "I'll have what she's having." That has nothing to do with my story.
The tag line with which the film was promoted was "Can men and women be friends or does always sex get in the way?" however this wasn't quite the question I was looking for.
The film follows the two people from when they first meet (on a long car journey from Chicago to New York), through out the next few years. To say that they don't get off on the right foot is a slight understatment. They hate each other. Sally is wants to get find love, have a family and the like. Harry doesn't. He's much more into one night flings. Not the most compatible of lifestyles. But over the years they bump into each other and become not only friends, but the best of friends.
Well, a divorce later (Harry, yes, really) and a broken engagment (Sally) our stars sleep together, and this is where it all goes wrong. Thanks to Harry (no surprise), who suddenly found himself thoroughly overwhelmed by his feelings, and so does what he usually does. And tries to slip out of the appartment in the wee small hours of the morning. And is caught by Sally doing so. This does not bode well for any relationship.
And when we say that, I mean that Sally takes it as a total betrayal of their friendship. Which it is. So she cuts Harry out, doesn't respond to his calls, that sort of thing..... Harry - "The fact that you're not answering leads me to believe you're either (a) not at home, (b) home but don't want to talk to me, or (c) home, desperately want to talk to me, but trapped under something heavy. If it's either (a) or (c), please call me back."
A couple of weeks later at New Year's Harry's out jogging when he suddenly realises that "when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible". So he heads to to the New Year's party where he knows Sally going to be and he tells her that he loves her. And then she slaps him. But it has a happy ending, so that's alright!!!
Of course, there was a point to all this (there is usually.... well, sometimes....) and in this case, I was using it as an example of what happens when two people who were close friends get together and how sometimes one or other may suddenly feel unsure of just what to do. A movie like real life..... wow..... and in the film it only took them 12 years and eight months to get together!!!
Now I want you to imagine trying to fit all that into a MSN conversation......
Tomorrow's post (for those who want to check it out) comes from the now defunked webcomic Avalon High by Josh Phillips. This wasn't used in the said MSN conversation because of two reasons.
1)I didn't think of it at the time,
2)According to Josh (ie - he didn't actually finish the comic) Ceilidh and Joe do break up right at the very end.
for other 'Harry Met Sally' quotes quotes
Harry - "I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."
