Last night I went to a theological lecture given by the Bishop of Reading. It was a very good lecture and the main points can be found over at the connexion but I thought I'd share a story that he told at the end....
Back when Bishop was mearly a parish priest he used to go to his locl school for assemblies and the like, followed by coffee in the staffroom. One time one of the teachers there as rather excited..... she had been doing an exercise with her children where they were blindfolded and then had to identify shapes by touch.
When the teacher put the blindfold on one little girl, she asked if the little girl could see anything, and the little grl said that she could. So the teacher adjusted the blindfold and asked again. And again, the child said that she could see. Now the teacher knew that the blindfold was on properly so asked the child what she could see.
"I can see trees and flowers," the girl replied, "I can see rivers and medows and mountains and the sky......"
And you know what, we, as adults, are going to teach that little girl that she can't actually see those things. Isn't that sad......???
