Just how important is the guy (or gal) up front......???

While reading my copy of The Times this lunchtime I read this article about a CoE priest who isn't just a non-Christian, doesn't just worship in a Hindu temple but is in fact a Hindu. He even wrote a book about his conversion to Hinduism.

Now, I know that I tend to err on the side on conservitism but I'm going to disagree with Mr Hart when he says there's no problem with being a Christian and a Hindu. I suspect that having an idol of Ganesh and worshipping Hindu gods does sort of break a few of the tennents of being a Christian. Like having idols and worshipping a god other than God.

And while Mr Hart does still have his licence to practice as a CoE priest he did admit that he had neglected to tell his home bishop (Dr Anthony Russell, the Bishop of Ely) that he'd converted. Which I think is one of the main reasons he still has his licence.

Thankfully I'm not the only one who seems to think that this is a bit silly. Pauline Scott, the team vicar of St James, in Stretham, said about Mr Heart's plans on coming back from India and staying on as a CoE priest; "We do tend to use Christian priests, surprisingly enough."
