How to read the library.....

Over the weekend I went to a church that was a little bit more.... happy-clappy... ok, Low Church that what I normally prefer... I believe that they are currently between permanent priests and so the one we had was there for the weekend.

She said something in her sermon that I didn't get. Possibly I don't understand, or possibly she got it wrong. I'll let you decide...

We were being told that the Bible wasn't just one book, but several, written over many years by many different authors. It is not so much a book, but rather an entire library of knowledge about how God loves us. (now here comes the tricky bit) Therefore, like a library you don't just start with the first book and keep reading from Genisis through to Revelations because it doesn't make sense, the books do not flow through one after another. What you do is read little bits here, little bits there and after a while you get the general over-view of the Love of God.

That just doesn't make sense to me.... surely just reading a chapter here, and chapter there doesn't make the Bible easier to read?? If I were to pick a selection of books from the library and read a chapter here a chapter there I won't help make any sense. Even if you select books that are all similar (such as the Famous Five series) you will struggle to make sense.

While I suppose that working through selections of verses might make sense when working examples, such as in Bible studies, but if you were looking for an over-view of a book (in the Bible) you would have to read the whole book, otherwise how will you know how the flow of the book goes??

I didn't go up and ask the Vicar if she could explain what she meant as I was too busy fielding questions by various people wanting to know who I was, why I was there, where I was from....all I wanted to do was drink my tea and eat my gingerbread snowman!!!
