Weather, cycling and the power of God

It was beautiful weather this morning. The sun was beating down and it was, for autumn, warm. In church the weather was commented on. This was part of the introduction: "Isn't it easier to praise God when the weather is good?" Well no. Not for me. Ironically the first hymn, sung straight after this, was How Great thou art, the first verse ending, "I hear the mighty thunder, Thy power throughout th universe displayed." I love the irony of the contradiction so soon in the service. Speaking after the service it was clear that our service leader hadn't noticed this. She'd gone straight to verse 2, "and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze." Some people don't notice the bits they don't agree with. This is autumn. The weather I associate with autumn is high winds, trees bent over in the gales and lots and lots of rain, often hail. Childhood memories are of chumping, collecting wood for the bonfire on November 5. Then days of worrying that we wouldn't be ably to light it. Late October/early November is notoriously wet. But watching trees bending over, dodging fallen branches as I cycle along the road battling the wind and soaking wet, does help me thing about God. The power of nature, sometimes too powerful for cycling, says something about the awesome power of the God who created the universe. If nature can do this, how much more powerful is God.
