Coming home

Diary of an accident victim Part 6

Accidents hurt other people than the immediate victim. Linda had it very hard. The day I was admitted to hospital was the same day her father, Alan, was admitted to a different hospital for an operation to remove tumours from his liver. So here Linda was, with her father in one hospital, and husband in another. And although the news was good about me making good progress, the news was less good from the other hospital. Alan had been taken to theatre, for the operation, only for them to find that damage to the organ was too great. So they closed the operating incision, and sent him back to the ward to recover. This is why on one visit I was the one who had to console my crying wife. She was upset at her father's deteriorating health, and I was stuck in a hospital bed unable to console her. I felt useless. This is also the reason behind my last night in the hospital; I was due to be discharged on Monday evening, but with Linda visiting her father in Leeds, there was no one home to look after me.

Tuesday 21 March.

The day I came home A lift had been arranged with someone at church, and Matt, my son, came to help me home. I was really glad to be home, even if life now consisted, during the day, of time divided between time on the computer and watching daytime TV.

...to be continued.
