Diary of an accident victim Part 43

Sunday 14th September 2008

Today it is two and a half years since the accident, and one month since I've seen a doctor. And I'm still feeling good The operation on July 2nd was successful. After two days of excruciating pain I was walking again. Proper walking Without a walking stick. Over ten weeks later I'm still walking - still stickless.

Wednesday 13th August

...was the day I went to see the consultant. I walked to the hospital. Without a stick. Because I could. (And because it wasn't raining.) He said that the operation was a 90% success. There is still the chance that the effects could wear off in six weeks, or it could last six years. But sooner or later I will be back to square one. One recommendation he made was insoles. UCBD* insoles made to fit the foot. Now I won't have to go to UCBD (that's University of California Biology Department) more's the pity, as I havn't been to the States since 2000. Casts are taken here in Britain, and the insoles made under licence here too. My initial enquiries are that something similar is available from Huddersfield University, only a mile and a half away. But now is not a good time of year for contacting universities in the UK.

Back to the present...

Today is not only the 30th month, to the day, since the accident. It is also the day I got my most recent letter from the solicitors. They have not yet received the consultant's report about the operation, so I'm still in a waiting situation. Last week was a strange one at work, I didn't have much to do in my job, but others on the section were extra busy. The upshot is that on Tuesday I ended up doing physical work for 3 hours. Non stop.I realise now what my limits are. And they are definitely less than thre hours. Having said that it is a vast improvement. Unfortunately the pain does not start until I've overdone it and I'm no longer taking painkillers to work. But at least I know I'm much better than I was.

to be continued...
