Administrative error

Diary of an accident victim Part 40

Saturday 21st June 2008

Return from holiday to the usual mountain of post. One letter is from my solicitors. They are to ask the insurance co. of the other party to make an interim payment to cover expenses I am out of pocket by, and also to cover loss of earnings while I was off work. I can only wait. Waiting is something that insurance companies are good at making you do.

Wednesday 25th June

The day of the injection. I'm to have a steroid injection in the bad ankle, with the needle being guided by X-ray. 8.15 I turn up at the hospital for an 8.30 appointment.

I'm shown a room. It's only day surgery, but I'll need a bed to recover in, and the necessary paperwork is gone through - another rain-forest has gone.I am left to change into the theatre gown, a garment that makes a fashion statement. And that statement is ILL! Put the fittest person in the world, with a glowing complection into one of these and they'd instantly look like they instantly appear to be in the later stages of a terminal disease. For those who've never had the thrill of wearing one, it is a one size fits no-one garment which is about knee length and ties, but is still open, down the back. This one was white, printed with the sort of blue pattern that could have come from an institution, and not from anyone with any taste in design. I wait. Fortunately I've seen enough of hospital literature (last February's Country Life anyone?) so I've brought a Terry Pratchett book, as I figure I'll need cheering up soon. I wait some more. The nurse comes back in sounding apologetic. The administrative person who had booked the hospital and the theatre time overlooked telling the surgeon. I'll have to make another appointment. I change back into my day clothes. I wait some more. Someone from the administrative staff come in to make a new appointment, so it same time, same place next week. Bugrit! Bugrit! Bugrit!

to be continued...
