Diary of an accident victim Part 28

Friday 10th August 2007

Seventeen months after the accident. Off to the hospital today for an X-ray. Nothing much to add on this, except it means more waiting. Get to the hospital early, sit in the waiting room until your name is called (half an hour after the appointment time). Then on to another waiting area. After the pictures have been taken there's another wait while they are developed. Then I'm told the X-rays will be forwarded. That's it. Nothing else. I'm not shown the pictures or told anything. Why should I, this is a medical matter, nothing to do with me. I'm just the guy who broke his leg and is feeling pain walking on it.

Friday 17th August

What a difference a week makes A visit to the physiotherapist. This is my first appointment, the treatment comes as part of the legal claim, and is a result of advice given back in April. (See Accident diary entry 27 below.) Again I arrive early, this time at a private clinic.Ten minutes before the appointment time I'm called to the treatment room, for an interview about the accident, and the right leg is looked at manipulated. Ow!I'm asked to stand on the bad leg and balance with my eyes closed. Easier said than done - I couldn't do this when I had two good legs. Another change a week later is that I'm told what's happening. Good news - The break in the leg is completely healed. Bad news - The ankle is still sprained.I've been walking on a sprained ankle for 14 months since the plaster cast came off. I'm told that a course of exercises once a week for three months is recommended. So it's back to what I'm used to - waiting for the post to arrive.I'm also told to put ice on the ankle for at least ten minutes a day, and not to do any strenuous exercise. I feel a lot happier now, there's nothing like been given information on your health to lift the spirits. I find medical secrecy is unnecessary and wrong.

...to be continued.
