Running

Diary of an accident victim Part 22

Friday 13th October 2001

Tomorrow (14th) is 7 months since the accident. So what's new? First the bad news, I got a letter from the solicitor saying that West Yorkshire Police haven't let my solicitors see the case notes. So things are still on hold there. The good news is that today I managed to run. Only a few steps, but without agony. So things are improving. Also this week I rode home from work on my pushbike with a colleague. Now I'm 52, he's in his late 20s. He's physically fit, I can only push the pedals round hard with my left leg, the right injured one just coasts round, and I need a stick for walking any distance. So how come I travelled the 3 miles hardly out of breath, and he was exhausted keeping up with me. Plus he spent much of the time in my slipstream.

Drugs

I've been thinking about drugs. Drugs are both what saves you and poison. They are both a blessing and a curse. In different countries the sign for a pharmacy varies. Some use a green cross, Some two twisted snakes, others a snake around a pole. The sign used in Bulgaria, where we spent this year's holiday, other than the word "AПEKA", is a snake around what looks like a Martini glass. The link between medicines and toxins is well documented, the doctor's skill is in administering the right amount of toxin to cure you.In my youth I experimented with a number of illicit substances. One I never took was heroin. It seemed too risky, plus I'd seen personality changes in people who took it. Seven months ago, in hospital they gave me diamorphine, pure heroin. I still managed to pass out from pain despite the drugs. But the irony is that the one thing I wouldn't touch is probably the thing that saved my life. .

..to be continued.
