Who are we here for?
Forty blogs of Lent
Day 26
Holy Trinity Huddersfield, Lent course week 4
Things that go on in a churchyard.
On Saturday evenings, when going down to the church to start seyying up microphones for the Sunday service there is often a sweet purfumey smell around the vestry door. The sweet sweet smell of dope smoke.
Discarded hypodermic needles and charred silver paper have been found in the steps down to the crypt. The seclusion of the churchyard has made it a haven for the local druggies.
But who is the church for? Should we be reaching out to these people?
That would be difficult, not everyone in the congregation is happy that a man who sleeps rough comes in some weeks at the end of the service when coffee is served. What would the reaction be if we started providing clean needles for the drug users. That is the way I'd like to see things developing.
