...or sticks?

Forty blogs of Lent

Day 21

Lent group week 3: Holy Trinity Huddersfield

Coffee, one of the most important things a church can do. Its when we take a more informal approach to theology, where things move from the formal approach of a sermon or of a discussion and deal with each other as people. This is what happened to me (again) on Wednesday evening. Someone said that I was looking more relaxed since I'd started the new job. I said what I found disconcerting at first was the shortage of sticks and lots of carrots. Management is done by incentives to good performance. I'm sure there is a cupboard with a stick in it somewhere, but I've yet to see the possibility of punishment being used to make people work harder. So different to the lst job where the management structure was verging on bullying. God is like that. OK, I know it's a cliche. But the incentives to being a Christian are great. It isn't an insurance policy to keep you from Hell fire, but a life of  living with God going with you through the hard times. Being a Christian doesn't keep you from trouble, I can vouch for that. But thee is a strength that God gives that sees you through the trouble. The beatitudes from the sermon on the mount show Jesus's approach. "Blessed are the...." Let's celebrate good behaviour.
