Forty blogs of Lent
Day 17
Sunday 3rd March - Holy Trinity Huddersfield
Today was a Lent lunch. Soup and a roll of bread, but you are asked to contribute what a Sunday lunch would cost you. A few of the local churches are holding these and this week was our turn. At first it looked as if we'd be the only people present. Except for one member of the local URC who was the sole representative of the other churches, but he'd come here straight away without having a coffee first. The others followed later, they'd stayed behind for a coffee and biscuits. Our week at hosting the lunches had coincided with the good biscuit week at the URC. This is what happens in the world of the non-conformists. Each week of the month a different group is responsible for the after church coffee, and they provide the biscuits. Rivalry between the groups means that no one wants the reputation of buying the cheapest biscuits, so a biscuit war has broken out, each team trying to outdo the other in providing the best biscuits. The group which cater for the second Sunday each month are currently the leaders. Still they didturn up after their coffee and biscuits, so everything is OK.
