A rant
Diary of an accident victim
Part 12
Sunday 14th May 2006
Two months today after the accident.
I start the day in a reasonable mood. I make two cups of coffee, which Linda and I drink while listening to the last hour of the BBC Radio Leeds Sunday Breakfast. Then bacon sandwiches for breakfast and off to church, arriving at the last minute because:
I can't get washed/dressed as easily as I could
I takes longer to walk to church than it used to, although I'm getting faster at walking with crutches
I can't be bothered to get up earlier to compensate for the extra time needed.
Thinks pass OK. Good service, After service coffee is weak as usual but drinkable. As we leave church a chance comment changes my mood, a friend says, "Steve, you're still crippling about." Not tactful.
Then outside someone asks how I am feeling. Unfortunately I take it question literally.
I go into rant mode, telling not just how I'm feeling, but how I feel about the National Health Service, how the government has doubled the money going into the NHS since 1997, and in that time the number of doctors and nurses has decreased while the number of administrators has increased.
You can't blame the government, the Minister cannot run individual hospitals on a day to day basis, neither can the civil servants in her department. The hospitals are being run by administrators. And it is the administrators who are getting the money.
It wasn't the appropriate time for the rant. Or the correct people to rant at, and I'm sorry that I said it, but I was at a low point (see previous blog) having been affected by a bed shortage.
...to be continued.
