A week off

Diary of an accident victim Part 10

Monday 24th - Friday 28th April 2006

This Morning Linda and I set off for Edinburgh. Tomorrow will be our silver wedding anniversary, and we are returning to the hotel where we spent our honeymoon. And we've got a free upgrade to a good room. Just two problems: I've still got a leg in plaster and need crutches to walk, as well as pain from the broken ribs. The train is late, and we only have 15 minutes to change trains in York. Fortunately for us the delays mean that an earlier train than the one we'd booked seats on turns up only a few minutes after ours was due to leave, and the connection is made because the second train is a few minutes behind schedule too. The East Coast Main Line is one of my favourite stretches of railway, not because I'm a rail buff, but because of the views - the big wheel at York, the white horse in the North York Moors at Kilburn, Durham Cathedral and Castle, the bridges on the Tyne, Alnmouth harbour, Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island. and the Northumbian coast. Travelling by road just does not give these views. We arrive OK. The room has views over Charlotte Square, said to be the best Georgian square in Europe, and a bed the size of China, (you could lose someone in there.) ... (I did.) Over the next three days we do touristy kinds of things; drink whisky, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Yacht Britannia, drink whisky, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Whisky Heritage Centre, and a ghost walk. (A bottle of 14 year old Scapa and 15 year old Rosebank are the fruits of my labours). Unfortunately I was not fit enough to attempt Arthur's Seat. Thursday we met up with some friends old and new from the Ship of Fools, plus one Church of Fooler, at a pub near the Scottish parliament. A good week.

... to be continued.
