Well I had a FABULOUS time yesterday!!!
The whole thing was at a swanky venue in London and the ceremony was possibly one of the most moving I have ever been to for several reasons. Before the couple, D & O, arrived the registrar announced that D's mother had passed away that morning, but that they were determined to go ahead with the event as planned. The actual ceremony was really dramatic and the pianist started playing the wedding march and then the double doors at the back were opened and there were two drummers playing a bhangra beat followed by two little bridesmaids and then the happy couple who were dressed in full Asian wedding gear - they looked incredible. The ceremony itself was very moving and one of the nicest I have been to (gay or straight), although when the pianist started playing A Whole New World' I struggled to keep a straight face.
The party afterwards was great - they had a jazz band and they also played some bhangra music so there was plenty of dancing. The food was yummy - veggie curry with rice or mini bangers and mash all served in little bowls by waiters. My friend Auntie Billie and I made friends with the nice Brazilian waiter who was very attentive to our drinks needs and kept topping up our glasses with pink champagne!!
It was nice to get dressed up and I felt very glamorous in my nice dress. In the end I wore my long velvet coat which had the added advantage of giving me a magnificent cleavage! :) I also wore a pair of divine high heels and now my feet really ache from too much dancing. I am more of a trainers or flip-flops girl so to see me all dressed up is rather entertaining for all my friends!
The ceremony and the party were the most wonderful mix of Eastern and Western, gay and straight culture and was one of the most accepting, loving and vibrant events I have ever had the pleasure to attend. I felt so privileged to share the joy (and the sadness) with the couple and I had a wonderful time. I was so proud of D & O and the dignity that they both showed, not least because this time last year they would not have been able to become a couple in the legal sense.
I wouldn't have missed it for the world, and felt quite emotional about being permitted to take part in the day. Half way through the event Auntie Billie declared she wants to have a gay wedding as she thinks it was better than most straight weddings she has been to! Not sure what her boyfriend will make of that suggestion!!
