August 2012_6867This afternoon The Mister and I went and did the "Babouns de Toreva" or the Scarecrows of Torteval walk. There had been a massive downpour just before we arrived so we spent at least half the walk under the brolly which was a shame. I assume that the event raises money for the church but I am not 100% sure. Anyway, the trail involves local residents creating a display of scarecrows outside their houses and some of them are truly creative. The trail is brilliantly organised and the roads are shut off and everything is signposted. The entries all get judged and prizes are awarded. The one thing you need to know is that a lot of the exhibits rely on local humour and current events. So, we had the Lee Merrien Scarecrow (1), several Scarecrows devoted to the £2.6 million pounds that was defrauded from the States of Guernsey (2), a Scarecrow of a local politician, John Gollop (3). Of course there were plenty of Olympics entries, including a Bradley Wiggins "Tostevin" and a few related to the Royal Wedding. One of my favourites was this really understated entry, the Cheshire Cat. It's a really brilliant event and I hope it keeps going for many years. (1) Local boy who will be running the Olympic Marathon. 2) The island airport runway is being developed and refurbished by a company called Lagan. It was recently announced that some genius scumbag had written to the States of Guernsey saying that the bank account details had changed and providing them with the new account number. Some penpusher changed the details and therefore millions was paid to a fraudster. Obviously, this is all being investigated and apparently they have arrested someone. (3) Well-known for being quite grubby looking, usually carrying a carrier bag, smoking a fag and often seen at events where food is provided.
