On Friday evening I went to Potters Bar to see a performance of Mack & Mabel It was an am-dram production but it was fabulous!

The story itself is quite dark and the story if based on two real-life characters, Mack Sennett who was Hollywood producer of silent movies in the 1920's and Mabel Normand who was a silent movie star. Mack was the guy who brought us all the Keystone cops and Bathing Beauties and people like Fatty Arbuckle and Charlie Chaplin started their movie careers in his studios. Mabel was one of the most famous silent movie stars and known for putting custard pies in people's faces. She died in 1930 aged 35 from tuberculosis but she was also a raging alcoholic and was dependent on narcotics.

I wasn't really sure what to expect as I didn't know anything about the show or the story... the dancing was great, it was very, very funny and the singing and acting was really good. All in all a top evening out topped off with some great company. One of the funny things that happened was I was sitting next to my friend Jonathan and during the interval I was trying to fish out my bottle of water from under my seat. To get to it I had to get on my knees and this old couple who were sat behind us started giggling and they said that that they thought I was about to propose to Jonathan. I didn't have the heart to tell them that I am not his ideal man (if you know what I mean!!)
