For the next couple of days I am working at home trying to write up my student's final placement report. She finished her placement on Tuesday and she has done a great job! On her last afternoon we went out coffee/supervision and I really wanted to gauge how she has found her placement and whether there is anything that I, as her practice teacher, or the team could do to make future placements better. Whilst I never expect to get glowing reports from students she was really honest about the things she enjoyed and the things she found tough, and over all she found it a great placement. Also, I know I am a bit of a slave-driver when it comes to reflective practice, theory, skills, methods etc. and I expect them to write over double the required amount of reflective logs that are required. She acknowledged that this was tough, but also how helpful it was in the long run.
I really enjoy working as a practice teacher with social work students. One of the reasons I first decided to do it was that I have seen so many shit social workers whose practice is dire and who demonstrate the exact opposite of what social work values should be. I felt that if I took on a student I would be able to influence good practice, and I hope that I can impart some of the passion that I have for my job and the types of clients I work with. I think I have succeeded this time, and it is clear that my student has found it a really beneficial experience.
She also gave me a fab mug which had been decorated with an artist's impression of me... I will post pictures when I get around to downloading them from my camera!!!
