Water PumpThe hospital I currently work at was originally founded as a Country hospital in 1751 and became the General hospital in 1945. It was where my Gran Nora worked during the Occupation and for many years afterwards. The hospital now houses the mental health services, including day services and a acute mental health ward as well as all the community teams. The building itself is an absolute maze of corridors. Some of the building is absolutely beautiful, built in gorgeous red Guernsey granite and the main building is wonky and charming, and has a staircase that ends in a brick wall. I wish I knew where it went. Other parts of the building are monstrosities, additions added on like giant carbuncles, ruining the beautiful original building. It must be a health and safety nightmare though - none of the floors are flat and I think you could put a marble at one side of our office and it would roll to the other - I reckon the drop from one side to the next is about 3 inches. This water pump is in the car park. I think that the plaque says Hopital 1810, but I am not entirely sure. I quite like the fact that bits of the old building are still visible, and it makes me wonder how many people have been through it's doors over the years. Who drank out of this pump? Or, was it used for washing. It's a fascinating place to work.
