This morning on Andrew Marr's BBC1 TV programme the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu made a public statement about his views of Robert Mugabe, the head of government in Zimbabwe.
As he cut up his dog-collar John Sentamu made the statement,
As an Anglican this is what I wear to identify myself, that I'm a clergyman. Do you know what Mugabe has done? He has taken people's identity and literally, if you don't mind, cut it to pieces. So, as far as I am concerned, from now on I am not going to wear a dog collar until Mugabe is gone
I have a huge amount of respect for John Sentamu. His history proves that he is a man who will stand up for his convictions and make public statements, both in words, but also in a visual form to make his point. Coming up to Christmas, one of the most important festivals in the Christian calender I assume that this means that he will carry out all his official duties without his dog-collar in place, providing a reminder to all who see him of the troubles in Zimbabwe.
