I rarely put up Christmas decorations as I am always with my parents in Guernsey, but this year I decided to make a few as I was meant to be having a few people over tonight for wine and mince pies. Unexpectedly (or expectedly in some cases!) everyone has cancelled so I am now sitting in my pyjamas drinking wine.
So... here is a DIY guide to Christmas decorations a la Auntie Doris...
Take a pile of oranges and some large red chillies (which I forgot to take a photo of!!)
Slice the oranges and lay on a baking tray, although I discovered later on they work better if you lay them on a cake rack and then on a baking tray - the air can circulate properly then. Lay out the whole chillies in the same way. The oranges dry best if you leave the door of the oven open a little bit. They need to be dried in the oven for several hours... at least four if I remember correctly and they need turning every half an hour or so.
String together (I used raffia) and hang around your room. Et voila!!
They look lovely, but the one thing I discovered in the process is that chillies smell absolutely VILE when they are drying. The oranges smell gorgeous though!
