I have just finished reading A Quiet Belief in Angels by R.J. Ellory. This is on Richard and Judy's Book List for 2008 and to say I didn't get on with this book is a major understatement. I tried to start reading it on three separate occasions and the first two times I didn't even get to the end of the first chapter. It didn't grab me and I just felt bored by reading it, something that is very unusual for me.

It is about a man called Joseph Vaughn who lives in a small, rural community in America and the story follows a series of brutal murders of young girls and Joseph's connection with these horrors. The book tracks Joseph through his life and the tragedies that follow him as he moves to New York. I found it a rambling tale and the twist at the end wasn't a surprise at all. The narration is all in the first person and I found slightly repetitive at times.

The reviews of this book have been amazing, but I just didn't like it. I found it irritating and frustrating, and whilst some of the descriptions are undeniably beautiful I just wanted to know what happened at the end because I just wanted to finish it. I usually love a good murder mystery, but this one was not for me!
